Creating Change in Nursing, One Nurse At A Time
Nurses Supporting Nurses
Burnout is all consuming and puts you into survival mode. It can feel like:
chronic anger and irritability
feeling overwhelmed by everything
unable to make decisions (decision fatigue)
depression, sleeping all the time
numbing yourself out with social media
drinking alcohol to relax and escape
constantly thinking about work, when not at work
lack of boundaries with work and others-always putting everyone else’s needs ahead of your own
unable to create sustainable self care practices to support and nourish yourself
feeling like you are on a hamster wheel of work and home life with no space or time to relax
Nervous System Dysregulation & Learned Coping Skills
Keeps You In Cycles of Burnout
There are many factors that play into developing burnout, some that we have control over and systemic ones that we do not; it all is overwhelming.
Intersecting factors that keep you in burnout:
Nervous System Dysregulation
Learned Dysfunctional Coping Skills
Work Environment
Focusing on what you can control in a sustainable manner along with tools to nourish and soothe your nervous system can create control and lessen the chaos around and in us, this builds resiliency. Once space has been created within your nervous system, that allows for evaluating your learned coping skills which is what you do when you are stressed and overwhelmed to soothe and calm yourself.
These are all interlocking but when the nervous system has more resiliency or space to function and you are using adaptive or functional coping skills when you are stressed and overwhelmed, this leads to self autonomy and advocacy. From this place of a centered and grounded self, you can advocate more effectively for changes to your work environment.
For those working in healthcare, unique factors include vicarious trauma and direct trauma, certain personalities that are drawn to the field and the culture and reality of working in the healthcare system itself which impacts the frequency and depth of burnout you can feel or experience.
“Your fatigue is real.
Your overwhelm is real.
Your exhaustion is real.
Don’t feel guilty about needing breaks from a world that was never set up to protect your mental health in the first place”
If you are struggling and overwhelmed, there is help, you are not alone

Burnout Support Group
This support group is specifically targeted at those who work in healthcare, whether you feel burned out or not. Community is a wonderful way to start working your way out of burnout and to help prevent it. My overall goal with each group is to give burnout education (i.e. tips & tricks) and build community. We will talk about the nervous system in relation to burnout, and give you tools to nourish and soothe your system. We are, of course, not limited to these topics, and groups will ebb and flow based on what interests or concerns you.
Groups are held the 2nd and 4th Thursday evening at 7p, Pacific Time via Zoom. Register HERE.

About Doris Taylor, RN BSN
After working in healthcare for over 20 years and quitting in 2021 due to severe burnout, I’ve created the resources I wish I’d had when I was in chronic stress & overwhelm.
I started my career working in adult med-surg and ended my career after working in a pediatric clinic for 13 years. Bringing the knowledge from my career along with what I’ve learned in my own journey and the courses I’ve taken to inform my practice, I’ve created a personal coaching practice and a workshop that speaks directly to those working in healthcare with the intention of reframing how burnout is viewed and what can be done.
